Civil Engineering graduate won the 2016 Ryerson University Gold Medal

The Ryerson University Gold Medals are the University’s highest awards, presented to students with outstanding academic achievement combined with outstanding contributions to the life of the University; and/or their professional community; and/or the community at large. Dr. Mahmoud Sayed Ahmed received the Ryerson University Gold Medal for the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science during October 2016 convocation.

While contributing to the life of the University, profession and community, Dr. Sayed Ahmed maintained a CGPA of 4.17 out of 4.33 during his Ph.D. program in civil engineering. His research resulted in 33 publications including 9 journal papers, 19 conference papers, 4 industrial reports and 1 poster. His academic accomplishments resulted in receiving 18 awards and scholarships including: Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS), Dennis Mock Student Leadership Award, Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) Foundation Scholarship, Norman Esch Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award II, and Norman Esch Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award I.

Dr. Sayed Ahmed has demonstrated outstanding involvement with the University, the profession, and the community. Among his service to the University, he was the President and Deputy Education Chairperson (Co-Founder) of the Civil Engineering Graduate Program Association, RSU, he was an Administrator (Founder) of Ryerson University Civil Engineering Graduate Alumni Society and he assisted the Department in writing first draft of the Department Comprehensive Safety Manual. Among his service to the profession, he has been a technical reviewer for journal and conference papers, a student member of the Structures Division and the Bridge Subcommittee of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering. Among his service to the community, he was a member of the Cluster Parent Academy Committee of Toronto District School Board and a member of Nelson Mandela Parents Council, and Nelson Mandela Public Park School.
